The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) announced the closure, necessary for the "Runway and Taxiway Repair Project." The closure will also ensure safety, fire prevention, hygiene, and worker safety during construction. The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) must adhere to construction regulations during this period.

Three upgrade projects at Vinh Airport have a total investment of nearly 1,000 billion VND. These include a 236 billion VND upgrade to the aircraft parking area, accommodating 9 narrow-body aircraft (code C). The T1 passenger terminal will be expanded to handle 3 to 3.5 million passengers annually by 2030, with an investment of 68 billion VND. The runway, measuring 2,400 m long and 45 m wide, along with two taxiways, will be repaired at a cost of over 623 billion VND.
ACV has committed to completing all projects by 30/12/2025.
During the closure, passengers in north-central Vietnam can use Tho Xuan Airport (Thanh Hoa) or Dong Hoi Airport (Quang Binh).
Vinh Airport opened in late 2003 with a capacity of 2.75 million passengers per year and currently handles 21 to 26 flights daily. In July 2023, the airport closed for nearly 16 hours due to runway damage.
