At 12:30, Nguyen Duy Khuong (a member of the Sailing Club Divers) was taking guests diving near Hon Rom (close to Hon Mun, 13 nautical miles from the mainland) when he saw many seagulls flying towards a spot.
Moments later, a whale surfaced to hunt, delighting Khuong and others present. "The whale continuously dived to hunt, while seagulls circled above. It was a fascinating sight, and we took videos to remember the moment," Khuong said, adding that the distance prevented him from accurately estimating the whale's size.
The whale surfaced and fed for about 10 minutes before diving and disappearing. A representative from the Nha Trang Bay Management Board said the sighting occurred within the strictly protected zone of the Nha Trang Bay Marine Protected Area. This is a positive sign indicating the bay’s improving marine environment.
Nha Trang Bay, spanning nearly 250 square kilometers, is one of 16 marine protected areas in Vietnam. It boasts a rich and diverse coral reef ecosystem, among the most vibrant globally. Whales have been frequently spotted in the waters off the provinces of Gia Lai (formerly Binh Dinh) and Dak Lak (formerly Phu Yen).
