Widespread power outage in Ho Chi Minh City

A series of central wards in Ho Chi Minh City experienced a prolonged power outage, the second city-wide blackout in under 48 hours.

Thanh, the owner of a restaurant in Ban Co Ward (formerly District 3), reported that the entire area lost power around 7:30 PM. The outage occurred during peak hours, causing significant inconvenience for the busy restaurant. The power was out for 20 to 30 minutes, forcing many customers to leave.

"It's been a long time since this area has experienced such a power outage," Thanh said. Years without such incidents left the restaurant unprepared and struggling to cope.

The outage affected not only wards in the former District 3 but also areas in former Districts 1, 4, 7, 8, and 10, according to residents. Numerous intersections experienced traffic signal failures, leading to localized traffic jams.

Luan Quoc Hung, Deputy General Director of Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVNHCMC), stated that the power outage in the central areas was due to an unusual technical issue. The company was working to resolve the problem, and power has since been restored.

This marks the second widespread power outage in Ho Chi Minh City in less than 48 hours. A previous incident occurred at 11:41 AM on 30/7, affecting several central areas in former Districts 3, 4, and 10 for approximately 30 minutes. EVNHCMC attributed the cause to an unusual operational issue at the 220kV substation in former District 8, which temporarily disrupted power supply to some areas of Ho Chi Minh City. The company issued an apology to its customers following the incident.

After Ho Chi Minh City's merger with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau, EVNHCMC also absorbed the two localities' power companies (formerly under the Southern Power Corporation) and now provides electricity services to all customers within the expanded city area. Reducing outage duration and frequency is a key business objective for the power sector. In 2023, the average outage duration for a customer in the city was 20 minutes, with an average of 0.2 outages per year.
