Wreckage of eight ships burned at Tam Quan port

Eight ships were reduced to charred hulks, with much of their machinery and assets completely destroyed, causing tens of billions of dong in total damage.

The scene of eight fishing vessels burned at Tam Quan port, morning of 10/7.

Yesterday afternoon, a fishing vessel anchored in zone D suddenly caught fire. Due to a broken anchor rope, the vessel drifted towards an area near the mechanical and shipbuilding workshop of Hoai Nhon Seafood Joint Stock Company (Thien Chanh neighborhood), causing the fire to spread to other ships.

Captain Nguyen Thanh Quang, 40, stands inside his 700 CV vessel, now reduced to ash. Quang stated that after receiving the news last night, he drove 8 km from home to the port, where he saw flames engulfing two of his family's vessels. He only managed to move the smaller vessel to safety, while the larger one was completely destroyed and beyond repair.

Some ships burned through their sides and sank. Among them was the 800 CV fishing vessel owned by Nguyen Thanh Hoang, built in 2016 and valued at over 4 billion dong (including fishing gear), which was used for catching tuna. Each trip involved over 10 laborers. Before the fire, the vessel contained about 2,000 liters of fuel. "Over 30 years of savings are now completely lost," Hoang said.

Nguyen Thanh Hoang, 50, a resident of Hoai Nhon Dong ward, felt helpless upon learning his 800 CV vessel had caught fire. All assets on board were gone.

According to Hoai Nhon Bac ward, the fire affected 8 fishing vessels, with 6 completely burned. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fishing vessel fire and assessing the specific damages.

Tam Quan fishing port is one of the largest ports in the South Central Coast region, located at the mouth of Tam Quan sea. The anchorage area covers about 70 ha, with pier E nearly 300 m long and pier D over 160 m long.

In Gia Lai, on 30/6, a fire at Thi Nai lagoon, Cat Tien commune, destroyed 16 ships.
