Owner of sunk vessel receives 2.5 billion VND in compensation

The owner of a fishing boat that was sunk by a cargo ship off Phan Thiet, resulting in one crew member's death, has received 2.5 billion VND in compensation.

On 10/7, Phan Van Chi, from Phu Thuy ward, confirmed he agreed to the 2.5 billion VND compensation paid by Viet Thuan Transport Co. Ltd., owner of the Viet Thuan 11-07 vessel, following the accident.

Under the agreement, Chi will provide 300 million VND to the family of Huynh Ngoc Truc, the deceased crew member, and 80 million VND to the remaining 16 crew members, with each receiving 5 million VND.

"My family will have about 2.1 billion VND left to build a new boat and continue fishing. No one wishes for accidents, so all parties wanted a swift resolution to stabilize our lives," Chi stated.

Previously, Viet Thuan Transport Co. Ltd. had provided 100 million VND for the funeral arrangements of the deceased victim and an advance of 2 million VND for each crew member to purchase personal necessities.

The accident occurred on the morning of 6/7. The 420 horsepower fishing boat departed Phu Hai fishing port for a fishing trip. Approximately 10 nautical miles (nearly 20 km) offshore, the boat collided with the Viet Thuan 11-07 cargo ship and sank. All 17 crew members were rescued, but one person did not survive.
