Neymar criticized despite not playing in World Cup 2026

Forward Neymar drew criticism from Spanish media after Brazil's 1-1 draw with Morocco in their opening Group C match of the World Cup 2026, despite not playing due to injury.

Neymar was sidelined due to a right leg muscle injury. Coach Carlo Ancelotti had confirmed before the match that the 34-year-old was not match-fit, though he was included in the squad list and present on the technical bench at MetLife Stadium.

His presence, however, sparked debate in Spain. According to Mundo Deportivo, the Brazilian forward was seen on the bench wearing a white hat backward, multiple gold chains, and matching earrings. This appearance drew sharp criticism from two prominent Spanish commentators, Manolo Lama and Julio Maldonado (known as Maldini), during their live match commentary.

"The cameras kept focusing on Neymar, and it's making me sick. Look at him with that earring, that cap", Lama stated.

Maldonado also expressed disapproval of the former Barca and PSG forward's appearance. "That's not serious. If he were in the VIP section, it would be acceptable, but this is the substitute bench", the commentator remarked.

Lama further voiced his displeasure: "It's not serious at all. What is the purpose of sitting on the bench with gold chains and watches? Is it to promote a brand?"

The criticism quickly gained traction on social media, particularly as Neymar had yet to make any on-field contribution to the tournament. However, many Brazilian fans viewed the situation differently.

Despite his absence from the pitch, Neymar remained engaged on the sidelines. During a first-half water break, he was observed conversing with Vinicius Junior and Bruno Guimaraes.

Neymar proactively pulled his two teammates aside for a private discussion during the halftime interval. Many social media users characterized the 34-year-old forward as an unofficial assistant coach for the Brazilian squad, continually offering guidance to the players. He was also noted for wearing a shirt of a different color than the team.

Notably, only minutes after this exchange, Brazil scored an equalizer. Bruno Guimaraes provided the assist for Vinicius to net the goal, leveling the score at 1-1.

This timely coincidence earned Neymar praise from numerous fans. On social media platforms, many comments suggested he demonstrated leadership and a positive influence on the squad, even while sidelined, according to SportBible.

Neymar is the most experienced player in Brazil's World Cup 2026 squad. He has participated in the 2014, 2018, and 2022 World Cups, and holds the national team's all-time scoring record.

However, in recent years, Neymar's career has been frequently interrupted by injuries. Fitness concerns have also kept him off the field under Ancelotti at this World Cup. His last appearance for the national team was in October 2023, nearly three years ago.
