Tam Dao Bac peak, also known as Bac Tam Dao, rises 1,592 meters, situated on the border between Thai Nguyen and Phu Tho provinces within Tam Dao National Park. Despite its recent emergence as a destination near Hanoi, it is considered an arduous trekking route, posing numerous risks for those lacking experience.
The peak's challenging nature was recently highlighted when Nguyen Tuan Anh, 19, became lost for nearly 40 hours on 19/4. He had separated from his group, attempting to find his way down the mountain alone in the late afternoon. A rescue team of over 100 individuals formed eight search parties, working through the night, eventually locating him at an altitude of nearly 600 meters in an exhausted state.

Quang Tien, an experienced climber of the Tam Dao mountain range, described the dense forest terrain as the route's most significant difficulty. "90% of the path winds through thick forest with minimal foot traffic. There is almost no open space to observe panoramic views or use visual cues for direction", Tien explained.
The entire route spans approximately 15,5 km. Without rest shelters or clear signposts, climbers risk disorientation if they do not exit the forest before 18h, when darkness falls and temperatures drop sharply.
Tien noted this route has only gained popularity in recent months. In January, a group of climbing enthusiasts, in collaboration with the Tam Dao National Park management board, placed a marker pole on Tam Dao Bac peak.
Manh Chien, founder of the Climbing Enthusiasts Association (Hoi Dam Me Leo Nui) and Yolo Trekking, who has also ascended Tam Dao Bac peak, identified overconfidence as the primary error made by beginners. "Many believe all paths converge, leading them to arbitrarily take different routes. In a forest, a single wrong turn can lead to complete isolation", Chien warned.
Experts strongly advise against beginners attempting this climb without proper guidance. "Those new to trekking or lacking experience should not attempt this peak, or they must be accompanied by a guide and carry ample water and emergency food", Tien stressed.

Before embarking on an ascent of Tam Dao Bac peak, thorough preparation is crucial. Experts recommend the following:
Mandatory equipment: Even for a day trip, essential items include a flashlight, lighter, knife, whistle, and a medical first-aid kit (cotton bandages, antiseptic, digestive medicine).
Emergency provisions: Always carry dry rations and enough drinking water for two to three days to sustain oneself in case of getting lost.
The "turn back" principle: If you realize you are lost, do not attempt to forge a new path. The safest course of action is to return to your last known position or remain stationary and await your group.
Staying warm: If an overnight stay in the forest becomes necessary, construct a temporary shelter from leaves and build a fire to maintain warmth, deter wild animals, and create a signal for rescue teams.
The northern region is currently experiencing its rainy season, making the rocky mountain terrain slippery and moss-covered. This also increases the risk of flash floods in streams. Experts recommend that climbers temporarily suspend spontaneous trekking activities in this area to ensure safety.
"If you lack the necessary skills, it is best to book a guided tour or go with a professional guide. Venturing out alone not only puts you at risk but also burdens rescue forces when incidents occur", emphasized Cao Thang, a member of a climbing forum.
