"Recently, I've seen information about airlines adjusting fuel surcharges. I booked and paid for a flight to Korea in 11/2025 for a trip in early August. If airlines now announce fuel surcharge adjustments, will I have to pay more?" asked reader Le Giang.
Luu Thi Thu, deputy director of Hoang Viet Travel, responded to the query, providing clarity on the matter.
"You will not incur any additional fees after full payment and ticket issuance," Luu Thi Thu affirmed.
Domestic and international airlines adjusted fuel surcharges in March, with most changes effective 1/4. New fuel surcharges apply to series tickets and group (adhoc) tickets where only a deposit has been paid to hold the reservation, and the remaining balance has not yet been settled or tickets issued. Consequently, when these tickets are issued, the new fuel surcharge will apply.
Beyond individual tickets for commercial customers, airlines offer specific policies for group tickets and series tickets to agencies and travel companies. This ticket category involves a multi-stage payment process: an initial deposit, followed by the remaining full payment, after which passenger names are entered.
Increased ticket prices impact tour operators and travel agencies for groups originating after the airline's announcement date. To secure tours and tickets for booked customers and avoid price increases, some agencies and travel companies issued tickets and made advance payments for groups traveling in April and May.
