Da Nang police assist foreign tourist in retrieving phone from drain

Hai Chau ward police helped a Hong Kong tourist recover her phone after it fell into a 2-meter-deep drain, following unsuccessful attempts by locals on 25/12.

On the morning of 26/12, a representative from Hai Chau ward police confirmed they assisted a Hong Kong tourist in retrieving her phone, which had fallen into a drain around 10:30 on 25/12. Initially, she sought help from hotel staff and passersby to retrieve the device. However, the 2-meter distance from the drain opening to where the phone landed rendered all efforts unsuccessful.

Upon seeing the tourist distressed and crying, a local resident reported the incident to Da Nang Police for assistance. Subsequently, the Da Nang Fire Prevention and Fighting & Rescue Police, in coordination with Hai Chau ward police, arrived at the scene to provide support.

A representative from the ward police stated that they spotted the phone using a flashlight. Due to the narrow drain opening and the significant depth, they used a hydraulic jack to lift the manhole cover. Following this, one officer descended into the drain to retrieve the phone for the tourist.

Upon receiving her phone, the Hong Kong tourist was visibly moved, repeatedly expressing her gratitude in English, saying: "Thank you Vietnam, thank you Da Nang police".

"For tourists, a phone is not only a valuable possession but also holds all their contact information, travel itineraries, and precious memories from their trip", a representative from Hai Chau ward police explained. They added that their efforts aim to collectively build Da Nang's image as a livable city, while also showcasing the friendly spirit of Vietnamese people to friends around the world.

Previously, Hai Chau ward police also assisted a tourist in recovering lost property, including a jacket and a wallet containing cash and personal identification, on 18/11. In Da Nang, many tourists have also received support from the Da Nang Beach Tourism Management Team in finding lost items, ranging from wedding rings dropped into the sea to phones buried in the sand or forgotten wallets.
