Karl Adolf Amrhein, a 57-year-old US tourist, was detained by security forces in Bali on the morning of 19/3 after being found walking on the main road in Sukawati village at 7:00, during Nyepi, the "Day of Silence." According to authorities, he pretended to be mute when taken to the police station, then repeatedly demanded to be released.
After discussions with officials, Amrhein stated he was looking for new accommodation. He claimed he was "forced to leave" his previous hotel in Ubud because his stay had expired. Local police then escorted the tourist to a nearby villa for his accommodation and issued a warning against any further violations.

Nyepi is an important spiritual and cultural holiday dedicated to contemplation, meditation, and spiritual purification. This holiday originates from Hinduism, which accounts for about 87% of the island's population.
Bali officials advise tourists to understand the strictness of this holiday. For 24 hours on one day in March each year, all Bali streets cease activity to observe Nyepi.
Regulations include prohibiting the use of lights, music, and vehicles. These rules apply to everyone on the island, regardless of religion or nationality. All businesses and public services are closed, except for emergency services. Air travel is also completely suspended.
Residents and tourists must stay indoors or at their accommodation during Nyepi. Hotels advise guests on permitted activities; some offer quiet buffets and restrict access to resort facilities. Other accommodations require guests to stay strictly in their rooms and provide in-room dining.
In 2020, authorities in Kuta detained another US tourist after he was found jogging during Nyepi. The individual stated at the time that they "just wanted to go for a run" and refused to return to their villa when informed.
