The incident occurred on the evening of 22/3 at one of the largest shopping complexes in the Pathumwan area, a favorite destination for international tourists visiting Bangkok.
According to the report by Quach Thi Thanh Hien, a Vietnamese tourist, the theft took place around 7:40 PM while she was shopping. Due to a momentary lapse in vigilance, she did not notice her backpack was taken until she left the store area.

Upon discovering her missing belongings, Hien reported the incident to Pathumwan Police Station at 8:23 PM on the same day. After receiving the information from the Vietnamese tourist, local police coordinated with the mall's security department to review surveillance cameras (CCTV) footage. From the recorded images, police identified the suspect as a thin man wearing a t-shirt and dark pants. He was seen leaving the scene and moving towards Phaya Thai road.
Within two hours, police tracked the suspect to the Soi Nomjit area. There, authorities arrested a 31-year-old Myanmar national, commonly known as Lane, who was fluent in Thai.
At the suspect's residence, police recovered all stolen items, including a black backpack and various denominations of cash: 9,500 baht (approximately 6.5 million dong), along with US dollars and Vietnamese dong bills. After being invited to the police station for identification, Hien confirmed all the recovered property belonged to her. Suspect Lane then confessed to the theft. He is currently detained and faces charges of "theft at night".
Under the Thai Criminal Code, ordinary theft carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a fine of up to 60,000 baht (approximately 41 million dong). Theft committed at night increases the penalty to one to 5 years in prison and a fine ranging from 20,000 to 100,000 baht (approximately 14 - 69 million dong).
In addition to a prison sentence, suspect Lane may face deportation and a permanent ban from entering Thailand.
Despite strict security measures in major Bangkok shopping malls, pickpocketing or opportunistic theft can still occur in crowded areas. To ensure a safe trip, tourists should always keep their bags in sight and never leave personal items on empty chairs or shopping carts in dining and changing areas.
When moving through crowded places or on public transport like BTS and MRT trains, individuals should wear backpacks on their front for easier control. Furthermore, dividing cash, carrying only passport copies, and keeping original documents in a hotel safe are essential risk prevention measures.
In the event of an incident, prompt reporting via the Thai Tourist Police hotline 1155 (available 24/7) is a key factor for authorities to quickly trace suspects through surveillance camera systems.
