On the afternoon of 10/6, two suspects approached a lemonade stand set up by an 11-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy on a South Boston sidewalk. Pretending to make a purchase, one suspect snatched the cash box containing 50 USD. The other suspect then pulled up his shirt, revealing a gun tucked into his waistband, to threaten the children before they both fled the scene.
The children's father promptly reported the incident to the Boston Police Department. Authorities released surveillance camera images showing the two suspects, who appeared to be teenagers, loitering in the area before the robbery. As of now, police have not apprehended the suspects.
The armed robbery deeply disturbed Boston residents, especially since the city is often lauded as one of the safest major cities in the US. Many expressed concern over the young age of both the victims and the alleged robbers, as well as the potential psychological trauma inflicted on the children.
Jennifer Byrne, the children's mother, described the incident as traumatizing for her and her children. She recounted receiving a tearful phone call from her daughter while at work, who reported, "Someone threatened us with a gun and took all our money." Byrne added, "My daughter put her hands up and said, 'Just take the money. Just take it.'"
In the US, children commonly set up lemonade stands in front of their homes or within neighborhoods during the summer. These small ventures are typically seen as a way for children to learn about earning money, interact with neighbors, and gain exposure to basic business principles such as pricing, customer service, and managing finances. Byrne lamented, "Those were two innocent children just trying to earn some pocket money, and they had to fear for their lives. It's horrible. I have no other words."

Mayor Michelle Wu has frequently characterized Boston as "the safest big city in the US." The city government cited data indicating that homicides in 2024 reached their lowest level in 67 years, and gun violence in 2025 decreased by more than 30% compared to the five-year average. However, this armed robbery has prompted calls for action. According to Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn, the incident underscores the need for increased police presence and patrols. Flynn stated, "No one could imagine a children's lemonade stand being robbed at gunpoint in what is called the safest city in the US."
Despite the traumatic experience, the two children expressed their intention to reopen their lemonade stand. Neighbors have pledged to visit the stand, offering encouragement to the young victims and helping them recover the stolen money.
