The man and woman, whose ages were not disclosed, each received 100 lashes in a park in Banda Aceh city, the capital of Aceh province, witnessed by dozens of people on 7/4.

"We apply Islamic law in Aceh, so whenever someone violates it, we must carry out the punishments," said Rajesh Kana, an official from the local prosecutor's office.

The couple was among six individuals flogged on 7/4 in Aceh. The four others received 8-29 lashes each for offenses such as: intimate acts with the opposite sex or drinking alcohol. One woman, sentenced to 27 lashes, fainted during her final stroke and was attended to by medical personnel.

Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim-majority nation, but Aceh is its only region that implements Sharia law. Flogging punishments continue to receive strong support there for various crimes, including gambling and homosexual relations.

In January, Sharia police in Aceh flogged an unmarried couple 140 times each for extramarital sexual relations and drinking. This appeared to be the harshest punishment since Sharia law was enforced in the province in 2015.
