Defense group KNDS Deutschland held a rollout ceremony on 19/11/2024 for two Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks destined for the German and Norwegian armies. This event marked the beginning of mass production for the newest and most modern version of the Leopard 2 series.
German officials stated that this is the "first Leopard 2 main battle tank built from scratch" for their army since 1992, as previous Leopard 2 versions were modernized from existing vehicles. The German army expects to receive a total of 123 Leopard 2A8 tanks between 2027 and 2030.
The Leopard 2A8 is considered a leap forward in combat capabilities and survivability compared to older models. The tank is equipped with the Trophy active protection system, which can detect and intercept anti-tank missiles or suicide drones.

This system comprises sensors, surveillance radar, a computer, and interceptor rounds. The Trophy radar can scan a 360-degree area horizontally to detect incoming projectiles. Upon target detection, the computer analyzes and commands the launch of interceptor rounds to neutralize the threat before it reaches the tank's main armor.
German officials previously tested Trophy on older Leopard versions before deciding to make it standard equipment on the Leopard 2A8.
Additionally, the Leopard 2A8 features reinforced armor and comprehensively improved situational awareness and fire control for the crew. This version still uses a 120 mm smoothbore main gun manufactured by Rheinmetall, like previous variants.
The first batch of Leopard 2A8 tanks is expected to be allocated to the German armored unit stationed in Lithuania. This marks Germany's first permanent deployment of forces abroad since World War II, as part of efforts to reinforce NATO's eastern flank against Russia.
The unit comprises approximately 5,000 troops and is expected to reach full operational capability by 2027, coinciding with the time the German army begins receiving Leopard 2A8 tank deliveries.
