Japanese prime minister reveals she sleeps less than three hours daily

Japan's prime minister stated that since taking office, sleeping less than three hours, or even not sleeping at all, has become normal for her.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi posted on social media this week, stating that during the three-day holiday from 18-20/7, she slept five hours daily for the first time in a long while.

Takaichi said that during the holiday, she caught up on a pile of ironing and sewing that she had put off for a long time. She considered the short holiday a time to recharge.

The Japanese prime minister emphasized her busy schedule, noting that beyond her official duties, she still manages household chores like laundry. She then diligently studies documents late into the night and early morning on weekdays, even after returning to her residence.

"Since taking office, sleeping less than three hours, or even not sleeping at all, has become normal", Takaichi said, adding that during the holiday she still thoroughly reviewed policy documents.

Since taking office in 10/2025, Japan's first female prime minister has kept her promise to "work tirelessly" made during her campaign. Takaichi previously stated she would discard the phrase "work-life balance". She committed to "work, work, and work", while also encouraging party members to work diligently.

After taking office, Takaichi sometimes arrived at the office at 3 AM to begin her workday. However, her high work intensity has caused concern among many, with some criticizing that such a work style also affects subordinates, demonstrating a "disregard for employee health".
