Connecticut state legislators recently honored Bella, an 11-year-old husky from Torrington, for her bravery. Representative Joe Canino and Senator Stephen Harding presented the award last weekend, recognizing Bella's actions nearly two weeks prior when she saved the family's 6-year-old son from a black bear that had strayed into their neighborhood.

Surveillance camera footage shows 6-year-old Colton standing alone in front of his house on 4/7 when a black bear unexpectedly ran towards him. Upon seeing the animal, the boy turned but was unable to flee, remaining frozen in place.
Just then, Bella lunged from behind, barking fiercely and positioning herself between the bear and the boy. The dog then bit the bear's hindquarters, causing it to flee.
Colton seized the opportunity to run inside, while Bella continued to pursue the bear, chasing it out of the yard. The bear collided with the family's boat, then squeezed through the gap between houses before disappearing into the woods. Neither Colton nor Bella sustained injuries.
The video later spread on social media and garnered public attention, with many praising Bella's courage.

Jeffery Tazzara, Colton's father, stated that Bella is always watchful when strangers approach his children, but he had never witnessed her react in such a dangerous situation.
Senator Harding praised Bella's loyalty, courage, and protective instinct, noting that the incident highlights the special bond between pets and their families.
Much of Connecticut consists of forests, an ideal habitat for black bears. The bear population in the state has grown rapidly since the early 2000s, leading to more frequent sightings near residential areas. While black bear attacks on humans are rare, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has recorded 385 reports of bear sightings since the beginning of the year.
