Pope Leo XIV, during his Christmas message, called for all parties involved in the Russia-Ukraine conflict to find the courage for "sincere, direct, and respectful dialogue", supported by the international community.
Speaking to approximately 26,000 people in St. Peter's Square, he prayed for "the suffering people of Ukraine" and urged solidarity with "those in need of help in Europe", a veiled reference to growing anti-immigrant sentiment across the continent.

The call comes as Russian and Ukrainian officials have held separate talks with a US delegation in recent weeks to discuss proposals to end the conflict. After nearly four years, the conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, widespread devastation in Ukraine, and millions displaced, seeking refuge in other European countries.
On 24/12, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a 20-point draft peace plan, collaboratively prepared by Ukraine and the US. This comprehensive plan addresses various issues, from post-conflict territorial arrangements and security guarantees Kyiv seeks to Ukraine's national reconstruction.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Russia is analyzing the draft brought back from the US by special envoy Kirill Dmitriev.
