President Donald Trump announced a leadership change at the Department of Justice on Truth Social on 2/4, stating, "Pam Bondi is a patriotic American and a loyal friend who has served devotedly as US Attorney General over the past year."
He added that Bondi would "transition to a vital and important role in the private sector," though details could not be disclosed at this time. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, a former lawyer for Mr. Trump, whom the President described as "a talented and respected legal mind," will temporarily lead the US Department of Justice.
Bondi also posted a message, calling her time leading the Trump administration's efforts to enhance US security "the honor of a lifetime." She plans to spend the next month transitioning her responsibilities to Blanche.

Sources familiar with the matter, cited by Reuters and AP, revealed that Bondi's removal stemmed from President Trump's months-long dissatisfaction with her performance. This discontent was particularly focused on her handling of the Jeffrey Epstein sex offender case. President Trump also believed Bondi was not prosecuting critics and opponents quickly enough.
The decision followed a 1/4 meeting between Trump and Bondi at the White House. This meeting occurred amidst increasing criticism of Bondi from both Trump's allies and some Republican lawmakers. On 1/4, Bondi participated in activities with the President, including a trip to the Supreme Court and events related to his speech on the conflict in Iran.
During her tenure, which lasted over one year, Bondi was a strong supporter of Trump's policies. She implemented many changes at the Department of Justice, including large-scale dismissals of long-serving personnel.
However, the most prominent issue during her term was her handling of cases related to Jeffrey Epstein, a billionaire accused of sexually abusing minors and connected to many wealthy and powerful individuals. Bondi faced criticism for allegedly concealing or ineffectively managing the disclosure of relevant documents.
Bondi consistently denied accusations that she politicized the Department of Justice, asserting her goal was to restore the agency's credibility after previous administrations' abuses of power. Her supporters claimed she helped reallocate resources to address illegal immigration and combat violent crime.
