He called for the establishment of a new supervisory board at Energoatom, the state nuclear power enterprise at the center of the corruption scandal, within seven days to facilitate a "comprehensive overhaul of the company's leadership."
The Ukrainian president also demanded the swift appointment of a new leader for the hydroelectric group Ukrhydroenergo and the implementation of other reforms for the giant oil and gas group Naftogaz.
"I have also instructed government officials to maintain regular and effective communication with law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies," he added. "Transparency and integrity in the energy sector remain an absolute priority."
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) announced on 10/11 the discovery of an energy sector corruption scheme involving 100 million USD following a 15-month investigation. Five individuals were arrested, and seven others face multiple charges.
Ukraine's energy infrastructure has been under constant attack from Russia, and the country faces a severe risk of electricity shortages this winter. Consequently, the corruption allegations within the energy sector have particularly angered the public.
Eradicating systemic corruption is a key requirement for Ukraine to become a member of the European Union (EU). The Ukrainian president also stated that the fight against corruption is essential, and offenders will not escape punishment.
