The Sarma multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) prototype was displayed by Russian arms exporter Rosoboronexport at the World Defense Show 2026, which opened in Saudi Arabia on 8/2. This marks the system's first public appearance.
Rosoboronexport announced that the Russian military has received a batch of Sarma systems and is currently conducting combat trials in the Ukraine operation.
At the exhibition, Russia also presented the Supercam S350 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), specialized in reconnaissance and target designation, alongside the Planshet-A automatic artillery fire control system, mounted on an Atlet armored chassis. These systems can integrate with Sarma to form a unified reconnaissance and strike complex.

Experts compare Sarma to the "Russian HIMARS" due to its high precision and ability to quickly deploy and withdraw, avoiding enemy counter-battery fire. This rapid operational capability is crucial in modern combat environments.
"The Sarma artillery takes about 3 minutes to move from shelter to combat position, and the firing time for a salvo of 6 rockets is 18 seconds. Sarma's tactical and technical characteristics have been confirmed in combat," Russian military expert Igor Korotchenko stated.
Sarma is a successor to the heavy BM-30 Smerch and Tornado-S multiple launch rocket systems. It can fire both guided and unguided 300 mm rockets.
Each Sarma combat vehicle features 6 launchers, a reduction from the 12 launchers found on the Smerch and Tornado-S. This design significantly decreases the vehicle's overall size and mass, enhancing its maneuverability across diverse terrains. The reduced firepower density is offset by the use of high-precision guided rockets.

According to Korotchenko, Russia developed Sarma in response to the demands of modern warfare. The widespread use of UAVs has made battlefields much easier to monitor, necessitating weapon systems that can rapidly move from cover to combat positions, withdraw quickly, and accurately strike distant targets.
The World Defense Show 2026 in Saudi Arabia took place from 8-12/2, featuring over 770 exhibitors showcasing the latest defense solutions, including unmanned military equipment, alongside air and ground demonstrations.
