Satellite images reveal damage to Iran, US in conflict

New satellite image analysis shows Iranian military and nuclear facilities, along with US bases, sustained heavy damage during six weeks of Middle East conflict.

Bandar Abbas, Iran's strategic port near the Strait of Hormuz, sustained damage at 11 different locations, with key warehouses and a docked vessel severely damaged by airstrikes.

Al Jazeera, a Qatar-based channel, published an analysis on june 8 detailing commercial satellite images of key sites in Iran. The analysis revealed new damage at the Natanz complex, Iran's largest uranium enrichment facility, resulting from a US-Israeli strike in early march.

The Natanz facility had been targeted by US and Israeli forces twice in 6/2025, with a GBU-57 bunker-buster bomb used in the second strike. The recent attacks caused structural damage to buildings, as well as access points for personnel and vehicles leading to the underground uranium enrichment areas.

Siri Island, located about 70 km off Iran's southern coast, serves as an important crude oil export hub with several major oil fields. Images captured on april 15 showed a large fire at the island's oil facilities. The largest storage tank, with a capacity of one million barrels of oil, was confirmed to have been hit.

The Bandar Abbas naval base is the Iranian navy's main military port. Satellite images from march 2 showed damage across the facility. The warship IRIS Makran was hit, with dense smoke rising from its deck. Heavy smoke was also observed in the area housing critical base infrastructure.

Fath base, located about 35 km west of Tehran, is a primary operational center for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) air force. This base houses key IRGC helicopter and drone units. Images from april 10 revealed extensive damage to the base, including a collapsed roof and severe damage to the technical facility and a hangar. Debris and scorch marks were also visible on the runway.

Vantor and Planet Labs, two major US commercial satellite imagery providers, limited, delayed, or completely suspended the release of images of the Middle East less than two weeks after the conflict began, following a request from the White House. This restriction meant some images only emerged weeks after the US and Iran reached a ceasefire on april 8.

Images of Al Udeid military airport in Qatar from april 4 showed a logistics building destroyed. A small hangar and a structure in the housing and support area also sustained varying degrees of damage. Al Udeid serves as the forward headquarters for US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees US military operations in the Middle East.

The Al-Dhafra air base in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) hosts the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing and many CENTCOM units, making it a critical link for US military operations in the Persian Gulf. Images captured on april 8 indicated that several main hangars at the facility were hit.

Prince Sultan air base is a strategic facility for the Royal Saudi Air Force and a key operational hub for the US military in the region. Iran's strike caused damage at three locations, including an aircraft parking area and a nearby building, according to images from march 29. Other images showed that the AN/TPY-2 "eye of god" radar, part of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, and US E-3 early warning aircraft were hit. US media reported that Iranian strikes on the base destroyed or severely damaged two E-3 Sentry early warning aircraft and several KC-135 refueling aircraft.

The 5th Fleet Headquarters in Bahrain is a strategic command center for US naval operations across the Middle East. Images from march 1 showed multiple radar domes and communication antennas at the base were hit, with several critical facilities and structures also damaged. According to satellite image analysis published by the Washington Post in early may, Iranian attacks destroyed or damaged a total of 217 structures and 11 pieces of military equipment across 15 bases housing US forces.

Ali Al Salem air base in Kuwait hosts the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing, described by the US as "a key air transport hub and gateway to deploy combat power for allied and coalition forces in the region." nine different locations at the base were hit, including tent areas and logistics facilities, believed to be due to debris from intercepted Iranian ballistic missiles. Earlier satellite images also showed four MQ-9A Reaper drone hangars were hit, while at least one Typhoon fighter jet was damaged. Clash Report, an X account monitoring open-source intelligence on conflicts, cited an unnamed source stating that the attacks resulted in the Kuwaiti air force losing three Typhoon fighter jets, each valued at $110-165 million depending on the version, with one additional Typhoon sustaining light damage. Italian media revealed that two of their Typhoon fighter jets stationed at Ali Al Salem base were also damaged during Iran's attack on march 5-6.
