A South Korean navy sailor went missing on the morning of 12/7 while on security duty in the eastern waters of the Korean Peninsula. The Unification Ministry of South Korea announced that the individual is believed to have drifted across the Northern Limit Line (NLL), prompting Seoul to request assistance from Pyongyang.
The ministry stated that the South Korean navy is conducting a search operation for the sailor and has formally requested North Korea's cooperation on humanitarian grounds. The identity of the missing service member has not been disclosed, though Yonhap news agency reported that the individual holds the rank of private first class.

The South Korean navy reported that the sailor was assigned to a frigate operating approximately 50 km from Geojin-eup town, Gangwon province. The officer in charge on the ship last saw the individual between 0-2h on 12/7. However, the service member was not present for duty at 8h and was subsequently declared missing.
In response, the South Korean navy and coast guard are coordinating extensive search efforts, deploying about 10 ships and several aircraft. The navy also notified nearby fishing vessels and cargo ships to assist. Information about the incident has been uploaded to the International Maritime Transport Network, which North Korea can access.
North Korean officials have not yet commented on the information.

South Korea's request for assistance comes as President Lee Jae-myung is seeking to ease inter-Korean tensions. His administration aims to achieve this through dialogue and confidence-building measures, following years of escalation between the two sides.
