An oto with a dashcam pulled up to a bend and stopped, waiting for a Maextro S800 to pick up a passenger ahead. A man entered the back seat of the luxury electric sedan, and what unfolded next quickly became a talking point.
After getting into the vehicle, the man waved his hand, signaling for the door to close. However, all 12 attempts were ineffective as the door remained open. Eventually, he had to reach out and manually close the door.
The Maextro S800, a product from the joint venture between Huawei and JAC, features smart electric doors with a 77-degree opening angle. These doors can be closed by a light push, a button press, or a hand gesture.
In some car review videos, the gesture-controlled door closing feature operates smoothly and impressively, as shown in the video below:
However, real-world performance does not always match advertisements. Some observers commented that the Maextro S800's technology is less responsive than an automatic faucet in a bathroom. Others suggested the man in the video did not know how to use it, stating that only a slight wave from inside the car is needed, without extending one's hand fully outside.
A more direct comment argued that the feature is meaningless. It takes only a few seconds to manually close the door and drive away, whereas some individuals might sit waving their hands without the door responding. For dealerships or car manufacturers, making things complex often makes them appear modern, regardless of the feature's actual utility.
