Two students died and over 20 others, along with four teachers, were injured when a school bus collided with an oncoming truck and another vehicle on a Carroll County, Tennessee highway on 27/3. The horrific accident, involving students on a field trip, occurred midday.
Eighth-grader Xelani Lugo, whose parents Xaviel and Rosalee Lugo were among those following the bus, was excited for the field trip. She and her classmates from Kenwood High School in Clarksville were traveling to the Greenpower USA Toyota Hub City Grand Prix race on 27-28/3 at Rockabillys Baseball Stadium in Jackson, where they planned to compete with an electric car they had spent the year building.
The bus collided with a Tennessee Department of Transportation truck and another vehicle. Over 20 students and four teachers were on the bus when the accident occurred, resulting in the deaths of two students.
Describing the chaotic scene, Xelani recalled the moments after the impact: "Everyone was crying. The noise was very loud. It was chaotic. People in the back just thought it was a minor collision. They told everyone 'Calm down'. They didn't know how damaged the front was. But from where I was, I could see people collapsing. There was blood on the floor."
The Lugo family, who witnessed the accident firsthand, immediately sprang into action, pulling children from the wreckage before even confirming their own daughter's safety. They highlighted the bravery of teacher Winn, who, despite being injured, refused to leave the bus until all students had been evacuated.
Xelani was airlifted to a hospital with several classmates, where she was diagnosed with a head injury. She was discharged late the same day. The Tennessee Highway Patrol stated that the investigation into the collision is ongoing.
