Honda: Quality remains paramount amid rapid development

The Japanese automaker asserts it will not compromise quality standards to accelerate new vehicle launches and compete with Chinese rivals.

Modern vehicles increasingly integrate technology, transforming their interiors into mobile living rooms or cinemas. While this reliance on technology raises durability concerns for many automakers, Honda believes it can maintain its established quality reputation without compromising its standards.

Automakers like Honda face pressure to develop advanced vehicles and shorten market introduction times, partly to compete with emerging Chinese rivals. The company is upgrading its quality control systems to keep pace with trends and uphold its reputation for reliability and customer loyalty.

"Technological changes, especially in software, are happening very rapidly", stated Eiji Fujimura, President and CEO of Honda US, in an interview with Drive. "We must compete with rivals from China and India on software and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). However, Honda must first redefine its core values".

Fujimura affirmed that Honda would not trade customer trust for development speed. The company ensures each stage meets quality standards before proceeding.

Noriya Kaihara, Executive Vice President of Honda Motor, added that Honda's quality management department operates independently from other divisions. This ensures quality remains the top priority, with all new technologies undergoing its rigorous review.

Should issues arise, the company prioritizes quick response and thorough resolution for customers. While a fundamental principle, not all automakers implement this effectively. Delays in fixing serious software or hardware errors can quickly erode user trust.

In the US, Honda has not faced many new competitors vying for market share. However, in markets like Europe and Asia, the situation differs significantly. Delays in resolving complaints can easily prompt customers to switch brands.

"Allowing customers to use a low-quality vehicle, compounded by delays in providing solutions, will lead to severe consequences", Kaihara emphasized. "Sometimes, you must act quickly. Even after thorough checks, risks can still arise once a vehicle is on the market".
