SUV stops on expressway, causing chain collision

On the Phap Van - Cau Gie expressway, a white SUV repeatedly changed direction and braked suddenly, leading to a chain collision among vehicles behind it on 15/9.

The white SUV repeatedly changed lanes, slowed down, and appeared to block a dashcam-equipped vehicle from passing on the route towards Ninh Binh. The SUV then braked to a sudden stop in the outermost left lane, forcing the dashcam vehicle behind it to also brake abruptly to avoid a collision. Approximately three seconds after stopping, the dashcam vehicle was hit from behind by another car, which then pushed it into the white SUV, resulting in a chain collision. The extent of injuries is currently unknown.

On expressways, any sudden reduction in speed, abrupt stops, or continuous lane changes carry a high risk of collisions due to high vehicle speeds, especially in adverse weather conditions like heavy rain or darkness. If other drivers act improperly, it is advisable to record the incident and report it to authorities, rather than attempting to impede or retaliate.

For following vehicles, drivers on expressways must maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead to allow sufficient reaction time if the lead vehicle brakes or changes direction unexpectedly. If encountering a slow-moving vehicle, one that changes lanes continuously, or shows signs of obstruction, drivers should not attempt to overtake at all costs or tailgate. Instead, they should proactively reduce speed, maintain distance, and only pass when conditions are safe. In cases where the vehicle ahead stops suddenly, emergency braking is necessary while simultaneously observing the rear and keeping the vehicle stable within its lane, avoiding abrupt steering into another lane.

According to Decree 168/2024 on road traffic penalties, stopping or parking an oto on an expressway improperly, resulting in a traffic accident, incurs a fine of 20-22 million dong and a deduction of 10 points from the driver's license.
