Cumulative sales until August saw the entire Vietnamese auto industry sell 432,548 vehicles, a 26,4% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The landscape of Vietnam's auto market in 2026 remains dominated by VinFast, with a race among Japanese, Korean, and American brands for the remaining share.
There are no signs of VinFast's sales leadership faltering; with growth exceeding 71% compared to the first 8 months of 2025, the Vietnamese automaker continues to widen the gap with its trailing competitors. VinFast's sales are even greater than the combined sales of 5 brands: Toyota, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Ford, and Kia. VinFast alone accounts for over 35% of the industry's total sales.
Toyota maintains its position as the most popular foreign and internal combustion engine (including hybrid vehicles) brand in the Vietnamese market. However, the Japanese automaker had a slow start in the early months of 2026, selling fewer vehicles than Hyundai, and even ranking below Mitsubishi in January.
The introduction of the new Hilux, along with strong sales growth for the Yaris Cross, Innova Cross, and Veloz, helped Toyota rejoin the group of hai leading brands in the industry. Compared to the same period in 2025, Toyota's sales for the first 8 months of 2026 increased by 14%.
Hyundai's sales over the past 8 months reached 31,540 vehicles, an increase of only 36 vehicles compared to the same period in 2025. While its market share still holds the vi tri thu ba in the market, the gap with adjacent brands is gradually narrowing. Considering only the passenger car segment, Hyundai's sales reached 21,949 vehicles, a decrease of nearly 6%.
Mitsubishi achieved a sales growth rate of 32% compared to the same period in 2025, the cao thu hai in the market, trailing only VinFast. Coupled with Ford's 9% decrease, the Japanese brand rose to the 4th position in the market.
The remaining positions in the sales ranking are held by familiar brands such as Kia, Mazda, and Honda. Meanwhile, Isuzu, Suzuki, and Peugeot remain among the slowest-selling.
