MG 07: coupe-style sedan unveiled

The Chinese brand's low-slung, coupe-styled vehicle, reminiscent of the Porsche Taycan, is expected to start at USD 29,400.

Following leaked images in march, MG has officially introduced its new MG 07 model. This flagship vehicle is designed with the ambition of becoming a leading choice in the new energy coupe segment.

The most striking aspect of the MG 07 is its design language. The Chinese automaker claims the 07 boasts an appearance comparable to luxury coupe models from German brands priced around USD 100,000. In contrast, its actual price in the domestic market is expected to be under USD 30,000 (200,000 yuan).

The 07's exterior features many design cues from the Porsche Taycan electric vehicle, from its elongated body to its muscular hood. The car is equipped with sharp C-shaped headlights and a wide lower air intake with integrated active grille shutters.

The sloping windshield seamlessly connects to a smoothly curved roofline, which houses a LiDAR sensor to support safety features. Semi-hidden door handles and faux air vents on the fenders enhance its sporty style.

The 07 is built on SAIC Group's next-generation new energy vehicle (NEV) platform. This new coupe offers both pure electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain options, designed to meet diverse customer needs during the energy transition.

High-end versions, priced around USD 45,000, are equipped with the Momenta R7 autonomous driving system. This system goes beyond merely mimicking human driving behavior; it can comprehend real-world traffic situations and make inferences and predictions like an experienced driver, enabling proactive maneuvers to enhance safety.

Momenta R7 promises urban autonomous driving capabilities and a seamless driving experience from one parking spot to another. When the car operates in autonomous mode, emerald green lights illuminate to inform those nearby.

MG aims to attract young customers seeking a premium-styled vehicle like the 07 at a cost comparable to a Toyota Corolla.

While its Taycan-like appearance has drawn mixed reactions, with a price tag of only about 25% of its German rival, the MG 07 promises to be a formidable competitor in the booming EV and hybrid markets, both in China and internationally. Further details on the 07's powertrain will be announced by MG soon.
