Sergeant Joshua Swisher of the Southlake Police Department, Texas, had just pulled over a Mercedes for speeding when a Nissan sped past him. Fire began to erupt under the Nissan's chassis, and thick black smoke quickly filled its cabin. Sergeant Swisher's quiet evening shift on 7/6 rapidly transformed into a life-saving rescue within seconds.
"I couldn't even see anything inside. The only thing I saw were the driver's hands frantically trying to open the door from the inside," Swisher recalled.
The driver was in a state of panic because the car door was jammed. "He grabbed me. We managed to pull him out just before flames consumed the entire car's interior," Swisher said.
A video recently posted by the Southlake Police Department on its social media account shows the scene as flames engulfed the Nissan. Police confirmed no one else was in the vehicle. The Nissan driver did not sustain serious injuries, according to Fox4.
Regarding the driver of the Mercedes Swisher had initially stopped, that individual had just left a nearby hospital after visiting a relative.
"Initially, it was going to be a ticket, but luckily for them, I just gave a warning because I had to focus on handling the fire. They were allowed to go with just a warning," Swisher said.
