The 'rolling roadblock' driving technique for police road clearing

Police vehicles moving ahead, weaving across the full width of the road, signal all other vehicles to slow down and avoid the construction zone ahead.

A rolling roadblock is a technique where one or more German police vehicles block all lanes, gradually reducing speed to compel all following vehicles to slow down or even stop. This action aims to slow or halt traffic flow on highways or main thoroughfares, allowing road crews to complete their work without danger from vehicles traveling at maximum speed.

This technique typically involves 5 stages: warning, team deployment, speed reduction, work completion, and traffic restoration.

However, rolling roadblocks are not always suitable for every construction area. Their use is chosen based on specific situations, often in conjunction with fixed roadblocks. This method is particularly effective when a short, controlled traffic gap is needed, avoiding the significant disruptions and delays caused by a full lane closure.

German police commonly apply this technique for work in elevated areas, such as repairing bridge joints, signs, and lighting systems. It is also used for painting road markings or removing large debris and hazardous obstacles.

The rolling roadblock technique is not exclusive to Germany; police in other countries, including the US, also implement it in similar circumstances.
