VinFast's range-extended electric vehicle set for launch

Dealers are currently accepting customer deposits for the VinFast Wild model, equipped with a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) engine, priced at over 800 million dong.

According to VinFast dealership sales consultants, the Wild could be delivered to customers in late October or possibly later. Detailed pricing will be available in September.

The VinFast Wild is a unibody pickup truck, emphasizing driving feel and body stability. This distinguishes it from most pickups on the market, which are primarily developed on a body-on-frame structure prioritizing durability, heavy loads, and optimized repair costs. All internal combustion engine pickups in Vietnam are body-on-frame.

Globally, unibody pickups are much less common than body-on-frame types. A few unibody pickups, such as the Hyundai Santa Cruz, Ford Maverick, and Honda Ridgeline, are not yet sold in Vietnam. Body-on-frame pickups also dominate sales.

The Wild marks VinFast's first pickup truck since its establishment in 2017. Its REEV (or EREV) configuration is also a first in Vietnam's pickup segment, competing against rivals like the Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, and Mitsubishi Triton, all of which use diesel engines.

The Wild's expected price of over 800 million dong places it in the mid-range of the pickup segment. Top-selling models like the Ranger are priced between 707 and 1,093 million dong, while the Hilux ranges from 632 to 903 million dong.

The REEV configuration on the Wild pickup combines a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The vehicle features front-wheel drive, with the gasoline engine solely powering a generator and charging the battery. Dealers state that the total travel distance, combining the gasoline engine and a full battery, is over 1,000 km. Specifically, in pure electric mode, without internal combustion engine support, the range is at least 250 km (NEDC standard).

An operating range of 250 km or more classifies the VinFast Wild as an REEVeb (electric based) according to Vietnamese classification. This could enable the Wild to receive the highest level of tax and fee incentives if the state encourages the development of this vehicle type, similar to pure electric vehicles. Another REEV type is REEVep (electric priority), which has a pure electric operating range of 150-250 km when the battery is full and the internal combustion engine is not yet operating.

In terms of design, the REEV can be seen as an evolution of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), but with the internal combustion engine not participating in propulsion. PHEVs currently receive a 30% reduction in special consumption tax compared to internal combustion engine vehicles of the same displacement. However, this government policy applies only to passenger cars, not yet to pickups. Currently, pickups only receive special consumption tax and registration fee incentives if they are pure battery electric vehicles (BEV).

The Wild's introduction brings a new dynamic to Vietnam's pickup segment. This segment emerged in the early 2000s, with the Ford Ranger maintaining a dominant position throughout. In 2025, the pickup segment consumed 27,093 vehicles, a 17% increase from the 23,159 vehicles in 2024. Pickup sales in 2025 accounted for nearly 4.5% of the total industry.
