The B-segment SUV market in Vietnam is largely dominated by conventional gasoline vehicles, typically equipped with naturally aspirated 1,5L engines producing around 110-120 horsepower. While these specifications generally meet everyday driving needs, carrying four or five passengers with luggage often requires drivers to press the accelerator deeper, increasing engine RPMs to achieve the necessary traction.

Within this segment, the VinFast VF 6 distinguishes itself with its electric powertrain. The VF 6 Eco version delivers a maximum output of 130 kW, equivalent to approximately 174 horsepower, and a peak torque of 250 Nm. The more powerful VF 6 Plus version offers 150 kW, around 201 horsepower, and a peak torque of 310 Nm.

A clear advantage of this electric drivetrain is its responsive throttle. The electric motor delivers instant torque, optimizing acceleration for both urban driving and highway travel. Nguyen Duc Thinh, a 41-year-old hardware store owner in Hung Yen, frequently uses his VF 6 for highway trips to Hanoi to collect goods. According to him, the VF 6's power is most evident when merging onto highways.

"The on-ramp to the highway is quite short, and trucks behind often travel fast," Thinh explained. "Previously, I had to wait for a significant gap before merging. With the VF 6, when I see a suitable moment, I press the accelerator, and the car instantly gains speed, with no hesitation."

This responsive throttle also proves beneficial on two-lane national roads. When overtaking slower vehicles, the optimal traction helps drivers accelerate more confidently and choose the right moment for the maneuver. However, safe overtaking still depends on traffic conditions, maintaining a safe distance, and the driver's observation skills.

Maintaining traction with a full load on inclines

The strength of a family vehicle is also evident on long journeys, especially when carrying a full complement of passengers and luggage. During a recent holiday, Thinh drove his VF 6 Plus, along with his wife, two children, and mother, to Tam Dao commune in Phu Tho, with the luggage compartment packed for the entire trip.

The road to Tam Dao features numerous consecutive slopes and curves, demanding consistent traction at low speeds. The VF 6 Plus's 310 Nm of torque from its electric motor ensures quick throttle response, eliminating the need to wait for engine RPMs to build or gears to shift, unlike internal combustion engine vehicles. This characteristic also minimizes increased engine noise when climbing hills.

"The car carried all five people, and the trunk was full, yet it climbed steadily," Thinh recounted. "I didn't have to press the accelerator deeply, and my mother, sitting in the back, commented that the car was smooth and lacked the noisy engine sounds of previous trips."

Should the vehicle need to stop mid-slope, the hill start assist system temporarily holds the vehicle, allowing the driver to move their foot from the brake to the accelerator without the car rolling backward. This feature is particularly useful on steep mountain passes or when other vehicles are following closely.

The VF 6 also includes traction control and electronic stability control. These electronic systems can intervene with traction and braking to help maintain vehicle stability when accelerating on low-grip surfaces or when grip varies between wheels.

Currently, VinFast is offering special incentives for VF 6 buyers. Through the "Mua xe 0 dong" (buy a car for 0 dong) program, eligible individuals can finance up to 100% of the vehicle's value without requiring any upfront capital, valid until 31/12. Additionally, under the second phase of the "Vi tuong lai xanh" (for a green future) program, owners of gasoline oto or moto who switch to a VF 6 will receive a discount equivalent to 9% off the listed price, available until 19/12. Furthermore, owners benefit from free charging at the V-Green system until 10/2/2029, according to current policies.
