Geely's Galaxy brand recently introduced the "Thunder" 16-in-1 electric powertrain. According to the company, this is the world's first system to integrate 16 functions into a single unit, achieving a record efficiency of 93,8% in commercial vehicles.
Developed by Geely's subsidiary InfiMotion, the Thunder system utilizes an 800V electrical architecture. It integrates 12 hardware components: electric motor, motor controller, reducer, dc-dc converter, on-board charger, power distribution unit, high-voltage and low-voltage battery management systems, vehicle central controller, thermal management system, active charging controller, and energy domain connection port. Additionally, it features four software functions: energy management, charging management, motion control, and system health management.

This integration eliminates over 180 components compared to traditional designs. Geely states that the power density reaches 16 horsepower/kg. The powertrain unit weighs 75 kg, meaning the theoretical total output could reach approximately 1,200 horsepower. The system also reduces the length of high-voltage wiring by 30% and low-voltage wiring by 15%. With a height under 325 mm, luggage compartment space increases by about 28 liters.
Other improvements include a magnesium alloy casing and an integrated design for the motor, reducer, and mounting bracket. A "one-chip" control technology is also applied, reducing processing latency from about 40 milliseconds to just 2 milliseconds.
According to Geely, a vehicle utilizing this powertrain was tested around Qinghai Lake, achieving an electricity consumption of 8,2 kWh/100 km. The company noted this was a test under controlled conditions, while consumption under CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle) standards could be 10,7 kWh/100 km.

The system also integrates artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize operational efficiency at low temperatures and high speeds. Geely states that at -18 degrees C, the system can store heat equivalent to about 7 kWh, thereby reducing the electricity required for cabin heating by over 40%. The recently launched Geely Galaxy TT SUV will be the first product equipped with this Thunder powertrain.
