Owners of Xpeng's X9 MPV are reporting critical air suspension failures, raising significant safety concerns. Many drivers in Chongqing, China, have experienced their vehicles suddenly becoming stranded due to the undercarriage collapsing, particularly during a recent record heatwave. Xpeng attributes these issues to a thermal protection mechanism, activated when the air suspension compressor overheats from frequent adjustments in high temperatures.
Xpeng's customer service department explained that the air suspension system activates a thermal protection mode under high temperatures. If the suspension height is adjusted too often, either manually or automatically, the compressor can overheat. This triggers a dashboard warning: "suspension compressor overheated, cannot adjust."

The company advises drivers seeing this warning to park safely and allow the compressor to cool, stating the system "usually recovers automatically." However, Xpeng has not offered a specific explanation or solution for owners' reports of air leaks leading to partial or complete undercarriage collapse.
Customer concerns extend beyond simple overheating warnings. Data from the 12365auto automotive quality complaint platform indicates these technical faults are recurring. One owner of an Xpeng X9 extended range electric vehicle (EREV) reported his air suspension failed at just 1,552 km, with the same fault reappearing at 2,500 km.

A subsequent inspection at a service center revealed a short circuit in the motor inverter and a blown fuse. The owner expressed extreme frustration, having needed multiple repairs within five months of ownership, and accused the service center of refusing to sign the fault inspection report.
These incidents are not isolated. Social media users have reported similar undercarriage collapse situations since 7/2025. Some owners claim dozens of members in large Xpeng owner WeChat groups have experienced identical faults.
In 2025, Xpeng's P7+ sedan faced a steering rack fault, leading to a recall of 48,000 vehicles.
To date, Xpeng has not issued an official statement, investigation report, or comprehensive solution for this wave of collective complaints.
The Xpeng X9, a super-smart, large 7-seater MPV, launched on 1/2024 with prices ranging from 359,800-419,800 CNY (52,900-61,700 USD). The product line has expanded to include pure electric and plug-in hybrid versions. In the first half of 2026, the X9 achieved cumulative sales of 13,324 units.
