Gold ingot prices reach over one-month high

Brands are selling gold ingots and plain rings for around 147.6 million dong, marking a high not seen in over a month.

On the morning of 22/8, Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) listed gold ingot prices at 144.6 - 147.6 million dong per tael, an increase of 600,000 dong compared to yesterday's closing. This marks the highest price for the precious metal since 16/7.

The difference between buy and sell prices remained around 3 million dong per tael. Other brands also adjusted their gold ingot prices similarly. For plain gold rings, SJC, DOJI, PNJ, and Bao Tin Minh Chau bought them back at around 144-144.5 million dong. Meanwhile, selling prices ranged from 147-148 million dong per tael.

Domestic gold prices rose in line with international movements, surpassing 4,600 USD per ounce. At the close of trading on 21/8, each ounce of world spot gold increased by 84 USD, reaching 4,602 USD. The international market saw positive momentum due to technical gains as prices broke key thresholds and the US Department of the Treasury's government bond repurchase policy.

Converted at Vietcombank's selling exchange rate (excluding taxes and fees), world gold is equivalent to 146.5 million dong per tael. This price is about 2 million dong higher than the buy-in price of some domestic brands, but still about 1 million dong lower than the selling price.

Doctor Ngo Minh Hai, Vice Principal of the University of Economics and Finance Ho Chi Minh City (UEF), noted that the narrowed price difference is due to the State Bank's proactive increase in direct supply and tightened market control through electronic invoices and cash flow identification.

Additionally, regulatory agencies have increased inspections, requiring electronic invoices for each transaction and identification for bank transfers to tighten market discipline and limit speculation.

Concurrently, world gold prices have seen sharp increases in a short period, rising about 5% over the past month. To prevent liquidity reversal risks and exchange rate fluctuations, Ngo Minh Hai stated that domestic brands have proactively widened their margins and anchored buy-in prices at a safe level.

Silver ingots and bars, however, fell by more than 1% compared to yesterday. Phu Quy, DOJI, and Ancarat traded silver bars at 2.32 - 2.41 million dong per tael, equivalent to 62.1 - 64.3 million dong per kg.
