Hanoi University of Science and Technology honors male student for rescuing seven people from a fire

Nguyen Le Tu, a second-year engineering physics student, received a certificate of commendation and gifts from Hanoi University of Science and Technology after helping rescue seven people trapped in a burning house.

On the afternoon of 25/3, the Student Affairs Committee and the Youth Union of Hanoi University of Science and Technology visited the hospital to inquire about Nguyen Le Tu's health, offer encouragement, and present him with a certificate of commendation for his "courageous act of participating in a rescue in an emergency situation".

Associate Professor, Doctor Pham Thanh Huyen, Head of the Committee, stated that the student's actions exemplify the courage and responsibility of Hanoi University of Science and Technology students.

"Without hesitation in the face of danger, you have strongly spread the humanitarian values and courage of today's youth," Ms. Huyen said.

Around 17h50 on 24/3, a fire erupted from the second floor of a six-story house with a rooftop extension, located in alley 218 Linh Nam, Hoang Mai ward. Seven people were trapped as the staircase was blocked by fire and smoke.

Nguyen Le Tu, from Hung Yen, was passing by the scene and saw two adults breaking through the roof to bring people out. However, with others still trapped inside, he left his motorbike, climbed onto an adjacent rooftop, and then moved along a makeshift bamboo ladder to the burning roof to assist.

The acrid smoke forced Tu to retreat at times due to chest tightness. In the pitch-black space, Tu and another person had to remove their shirts, soak them in water, and cover their noses and mouths. They then navigated by touch to go deeper inside, bringing each person out via the rooftop.

"Everyone calls me a hero, but I'm just an ordinary person. If it were anyone else, I'm sure they would also participate in the rescue," Tu said, while monitoring his health at the hospital. The student even declined when people hailed him as a hero and offered interviews.

According to Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Tu is known for being gentle, enthusiastic, and actively participating in community activities. His academic performance consistently ranks among the top in his engineering physics class, with a current cumulative GPA above 3,4/4 and a conduct score above 90/100.
