Ho Chi Minh City University of Law's new graduates hold first "pledge ceremony" akin to medical oaths

Nearly 1,750 new graduates from Ho Chi Minh City University of Law participated in a pledge ceremony, making five commitments to integrity, upholding the law, and contributing to society.

On the morning of 8/8, Ho Chi Minh City University of Law (ULAW) organized a new graduate recognition ceremony, a departure from the traditional "graduation ceremony." The highlight of the event was the "pledge ceremony" ritual, marking its debut in the university's history.

During the ceremony, nearly 1,750 new graduates placed their hands on their left chests, facing their teachers, and collectively recited five promises: To live honestly, with integrity, courage, and humanity; To uphold the law and serve justice; To continuously learn, innovate, and improve themselves; To use knowledge to serve the nation, its people, and society; To preserve and promote ULAW's reputation.

"From today, we proudly step forward from ULAW, enlightened by knowledge, firm in justice, and responsible for the future," all new graduates proclaimed in unison.

This ritual bears a strong resemblance to the moment new doctors recite the Hippocratic Oath during medical school graduation ceremonies. Ho Chi Minh City University of Law is the first institution outside the medical field to incorporate such a ceremony into its graduation proceedings.

Doctor Le Truong Son, Principal of ULAW, stated that this activity will become a ULAW tradition. He emphasized that building on the pride of holding their diplomas, each student will be reminded of their responsibilities to their profession, society, and the values they pursue.

Changing the ceremony's name from "graduation" to "recognition" also reflects the university's educational philosophy. This event signifies not just the completion of an academic program but, more importantly, each student's journey of effort and growth.

"Later, you may forget which row you sat in today's hall, but you will never forget the words you have pledged," Doctor Son said, underscoring the ceremony's lasting impact.

He hopes that new graduates will maintain integrity in their careers, regardless of their positions. While they may not necessarily achieve great feats, he encouraged them to contribute kindness and good deeds to society.

Among the nearly 1,750 new graduates in this cohort, 62 students achieved excellent rankings, representing 3.5%, a slight increase from last year. 422 students achieved good rankings, accounting for 24%, a 4% decrease.

The valedictorians for this year are Tran Phuong Thao, from the high-quality law program, and Le Huynh Bao Tram, from the standard law program. They achieved grade point averages (GPA) of 3,8/4 and 99/100 in conduct scores, respectively.
