Chen Ching-he, principal of Shih Hsin University, addressed his graduation speech earlier this month.
During the ceremony, he told graduates: "If you do not manage your time, emotions, or health well, I frankly tell you to 'end yourselves' soon, because this world has no need for 'you'."
This statement quickly ignited a wave of criticism on social media. In a public announcement, Chen explained that his speech was not thoroughly vetted due to a busy schedule, leading to a misrepresentation of his original intent.
Chen clarified that his message aimed to encourage new graduates to cultivate maturity, keen judgment, and a positive attitude in their interactions. He affirmed he had no intention of promoting negative thoughts, contrary to the social media backlash.
The principal offered a sincere apology to the public, faculty, and students for the disruption caused by his remarks. He committed to serious self-reflection and proposed a two-month suspension from work without pay to demonstrate his remorse and ensure greater caution in the future.
A representative from Shih Hsin University stated the institution respects Chen's decision. The vice principal will oversee the university's operations during this period.
Shih Hsin University, a private institution, is ranked 1401-1500 globally by QS in 2026. The university is strong in communication and journalism fields.
