According to Netflix statistics released on 26/8, the film garnered 25.4 million views worldwide between August 18 and 24, bringing its total viewership to 236 million. Last weekend, Netflix also released "Kpop Demon Hunters" in theaters across the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
While the production team hasn't disclosed box office figures, sources at the Hollywood Reporter indicate the film topped the North American box office from August 22 to 24, earning an estimated 18 to 20 million USD. Four songs from the film simultaneously entered the Billboard Hot 100's top 10, a first in the chart's history.
Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the film follows the three-member girl group Huntrix, who use their voices as weapons, creating barriers called "honmoon" to seal demons underground. However, the demon Gwi Ma forms the boy band Saja Boys to overthrow Huntrix. Faced with a global threat, the girls must fight to protect humanity.
According to AP, the film has generated significant buzz by exploring music and idol themes, offering a novel approach: turning melodies into weapons in the battle between good and evil. The producers focused on creating catchy tunes, led by The Black Label, a company founded by producer Teddy Park, the mastermind behind numerous hits for Blackpink and 2NE1. Billboard notes that many listeners discovered the film through its music, broadening its audience appeal.
AP observes that "Kpop Demon Hunters'" success is rare for an animated film with an original screenplay, not based on an existing franchise. The novelty, combined with the blend of Korean and Western elements, gives the film a unique appeal. The Hollywood Reporter commented, "The project delivers catchy songs, combines action and humor with a fast pace, and stands out compared to other recent animated theatrical releases".
