On 20/1, Master.Doctor Nguyen Trung Hieu from the Center for Nephrology and Dialysis, Bach Mai Hospital, announced that a 24-year-old patient was diagnosed with secondary hypogonadism. Doctors initiated hormone replacement therapy to stimulate the development of male characteristics in his body.
The patient had noticed these bodily differences for years but dismissed them as merely "late puberty", delaying medical attention. Clinical examination revealed a high-pitched voice, a tall and slender physique with long limbs, a slightly developed chest, and a complete absence of facial or armpit hair. Notably, his testicles were very small and soft.
Doctor Hieu emphasized that late detection and treatment of hypogonadism lead to serious physical and mental health repercussions. The average age for male puberty is typically between 9 and 14 years old. Patients face a high risk of infertility due to underdeveloped testicles that cannot produce sperm. Moreover, prolonged testosterone deficiency can result in reduced bone density, increasing the likelihood of early fractures and fostering feelings of inferiority and self-consciousness.
Experts identify two primary categories of causes for this condition. The first group involves testicular issues, frequently stemming from genetic abnormalities such as Klinefelter syndrome, undescended testicles, or complications following mumps. The second group originates from the central nervous system, occurring when the pituitary gland or hypothalamus fails to transmit the essential endocrine signals required to activate testicular function.
Doctors advise parents and males to be vigilant, especially around the age of 14. If a male's body has not exhibited signs of puberty by this age, such as voice deepening, hair growth, or genital development, immediate consultation with a specialist medical facility is crucial. Modern medicine offers effective treatment for most cases of hypogonadism. Timely intervention can significantly help preserve fertility, enhance physical well-being, and improve the overall quality of life for affected individuals.
