According to nutritionist Pham Hong Ngoc from the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, honey, when combined with various common ingredients and foods, can support digestion, immunity, energy, and overall health.
Honey with milk
Drinking honey with warm milk before bed can promote better sleep. Both contain tryptophan, an amino acid involved in producing nerve-calming hormones.
Milk provides calcium and vitamins, which are essential nutrients for bone health. Honey's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties may reduce the risk of osteoporosis (progressive bone loss) or slow its progression.
Studies indicate that whole milk can increase high-density lipoprotein (hdl) cholesterol, known as "good" cholesterol, while honey helps reduce low-density lipoprotein (ldl) cholesterol, or "bad" cholesterol.

Honey with apple cider vinegar
Combining apple cider vinegar and honey creates an herbal tonic called "oxymel", which can improve digestion, control blood sugar levels, and boost the immune system.
Apple cider vinegar contains probiotics that help balance the gut microbiome. Honey, a source of prebiotics, promotes the growth of healthy gut bacteria.
Additionally, apple cider vinegar helps the body use insulin effectively, aiding in blood sugar control. While honey is a source of sugar, it raises blood sugar more slowly than refined sugar. Both apple cider vinegar and honey contain antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds that support the body's immune system.
Honey and garlic
Garlic-infused honey is prepared by steeping garlic cloves in honey and allowing them to ferment for several weeks to months. After fermentation, it can be used in cooking or consumed directly.
Garlic can lower bad cholesterol and reduce blood pressure in individuals with mild hypertension. Studies indicate that garlic enhances the effects of metformin (a hypoglycemic drug used for diabetes) and stimulates insulin production.
Honey can serve as a suitable alternative to refined sugar for individuals with type 2 diabetes. Both honey and garlic are rich in antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiviral compounds.
Honey with warm water
Honey contains natural sugars like fructose and glucose, providing energy without excessive fat accumulation when consumed in moderation. Drinking honey dissolved in warm water in the morning can create a mild feeling of fullness, help control appetite, and reduce the tendency to consume unnecessary high-calorie foods. Furthermore, this combination can gently stimulate metabolism, supporting energy burning.
Honey mixed with warm water can also soothe sore throats and reduce coughing. Research suggests that honey, especially raw or minimally processed varieties, can balance the digestive system by supporting beneficial gut bacteria.
Proper use of honey with warm water is crucial to avoid adverse effects. First, avoid mixing honey with excessively hot water (above 40°C), as high temperatures can destroy its natural enzymes. Heating honey can also create "ama" toxins, which may accumulate in the body and affect long-term health.
Additionally, while honey is a natural sweetener, it contains a high sugar content. Individuals with diabetes or metabolic disorders should consult a doctor before consumption. Those with a history of honey allergies also need to exercise caution.
