4 types of drinks that can accelerate brain aging

Soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, sugary coffee, and energy drinks, if consumed regularly, can affect brain health.

Soft drinks

Soft drinks contain substantial added sugar but often lack nutrients. Daily consumption can negatively impact metabolic health, indirectly affecting the brain. Instead of regular soft drink intake, consider choosing water, unsweetened tea, or limiting added sugar in beverages.

Alcoholic beverages

Alcoholic beverages can affect the brain with regular or heavy consumption. Alcohol impacts the nervous system, and prolonged exposure is linked to structural brain changes. A 2024 analysis by Tabriz University of Medical Sciences (Iran) of 17 studies involving 80,000 people indicated that higher alcohol intake, especially over 30,5 g of alcohol per day, was associated with an elevated risk of cognitive impairment.

Sugary coffee

Consuming mot-hai cups of pure coffee daily shows little association with cognitive impairment risk. Conversely, coffee with added sugar, condensed milk, syrup, or cream increases sugar and energy intake. High levels of added sugar contribute to the overall dietary sugar load, potentially diminishing the drink's nutritional benefits. Therefore, if drinking coffee, prioritize options with little or no added sugar.

Energy drinks

Energy drinks typically contain caffeine and sugar. While caffeine can enhance alertness and focus in the short term, regular consumption does not equate to long-term brain health benefits. Caffeine improves executive control and working memory, whereas glucose alone does not offer similar effects. Avoid over-relying on energy drinks to combat drowsiness or maintain alertness. Water, pure coffee, or low-sugar tea are often more suitable choices for daily life.
