Artificial penile implant allows 61-year-old patient to 'turn on and off' his manhood

A 61-year-old man, who experienced erectile dysfunction after cancer treatment, underwent surgery to implant an artificial penile prosthesis, improving his sexual life.

On 2/4, Doctor Nguyen Tuan Dat, Head of the Andrology Department, 108 Military Central Hospital, stated that the patient underwent radical prostatectomy for cancer in 2025. While the cancer treatment was successful, he completely lost his erectile function, leading to a decline in his quality of life due to an unfulfilling sex life and a significant impact on his psychological well-being.

The patient sought treatment at various facilities and tried different methods, but none were effective. After consultation, he decided to opt for artificial penile implant surgery. The surgery was successful, and the patient recovered well, was in stable condition, and has been discharged from the hospital.

"Initial results show the device is functioning well, restoring confidence and hope for the patient in re-establishing their personal life," said Doctor Dat.

The artificial penile implant technique involves inserting a device with three components into the body: two cylinders placed within the corpora cavernosa of the penis, a pump located in the scrotum, and a fluid reservoir in the abdomen. When desiring intercourse, the patient simply controls the device. This method does not affect sensation or ejaculatory ability if the testicles and vas deferens remain intact. With a small incision in the scrotal area, the patient will experience virtually no visible scarring after surgery.

Currently, many patients have also chosen this technique to improve their sexual lives. For example, a 62-year-old man from Ha Noi, who completely lost erectile function—a common consequence after pelvic surgeries—found hope and improved his life through artificial penile implant surgery.

Notably, a prominent case involved a 33-year-old man who suffered from impotence, was unable to have sexual intercourse, and had no children after two years of marriage. After undergoing artificial penile implant surgery, the patient achieved a fulfilling sex life, and his wife is now pregnant.

"This is a special case where professionals like us feel our actions truly bring meaning and happiness to patients," shared Doctor Dat.

Erectile dysfunction is a condition where a man cannot achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. The condition affects over 150 million men worldwide, with causes including underlying medical conditions such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, diabetes, neurological disorders, medications, or injuries. Most men with erectile dysfunction initially receive treatment following a medication regimen. Approximately 20-30% of patients do not respond to medication and require alternative treatment methods.

Andrology specialists advise men not to silently endure erectile dysfunction issues, especially after surgical interventions. Early consultation at reputable specialized facilities will help patients receive appropriate guidance and choose suitable treatment methods, thereby improving their quality of life.
