Can high blood fat be cured?

My father, 60, was diagnosed with high blood fat during a health check-up. Can this condition be completely cured in older adults? (Hoang Nam, Ho Chi Minh City)

Dyslipidemia, characterized by abnormal levels of fats in the blood, can be managed but not permanently cured, particularly in older adults. This condition involves elevated total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, triglycerides, or reduced high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Its causes are diverse, ranging from genetic predispositions and unhealthy diets to sedentary lifestyles or complications from underlying health issues such as diabetes and kidney disease.

High blood fat is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke, especially in older adults. Elevated blood fat can accumulate in artery walls, forming atherosclerotic plaques. These plaques narrow or block blood vessels, impeding blood flow and increasing the risk of serious cardiovascular events. For older individuals, diminished metabolic capacity further exacerbates the risk of dyslipidemia and its dangerous complications, which can impact heart health, blood pressure, liver, and kidneys.

While dyslipidemia can be controlled, it is prone to recurrence if underlying risk factors, such as genetics, diet, and lifestyle, are not thoroughly addressed. Patients must combine non-pharmacological methods with medication when necessary to maintain blood fat levels within a safe range.

Individuals with high blood fat should adopt and maintain a balanced diet, prioritizing fiber-rich foods and healthy fats while reducing fried items, animal fats, and sugar. Regular physical activity, weight management, and limiting alcohol, tobacco, and stress are also crucial daily practices.

Adhering to a doctor's treatment plan and attending regular check-ups is essential for early detection and timely intervention of any abnormalities. Additionally, supplementing with GDL-5 (Policosanol), extracted from South American sugarcane wax, can support blood fat control and contribute to long-term cardiovascular health. Studies indicate GDL-5 may improve blood fat levels within 4-8 weeks of use without adverse effects on the liver, kidneys, or stomach.
