Cho Ray Hospital director: 'Phu Quoc needs to enhance on-site emergency capabilities'

Enhancing local medical and emergency care capabilities provides residents and visitors on the island with better opportunities for timely treatment, according to Dr. Pham Thanh Viet, Specialist Doctor Level II and Director of Cho Ray Hospital.

On 25/7, Mat Troi Phu Quoc Hospital signed a comprehensive professional cooperation agreement with Cho Ray Hospital and Military Hospital 175. This partnership aims to significantly boost the island's healthcare capacity, particularly in emergency and treatment services for both residents and tourists.

Dr. Pham Thanh Viet, a native of Phu Quoc, emphasized the critical need for this collaboration. He noted that Phu Quoc's distance from the mainland often complicates emergency transfers, consuming valuable time that can be decisive for patient survival and recovery, especially in life-threatening conditions. A robust, on-island emergency and treatment facility is therefore essential.

The director highlighted the profound significance of this cooperation for local emergency and treatment services. Many severe medical conditions, if not addressed within the "golden hour," can lead to long-term sequelae, impacting quality of life or, more seriously, threatening lives. Such complications can also impose significant economic burdens on families, especially if the patient is a primary earner.

A recent incident involving a capsized canoe in Phu Quoc demonstrated the effectiveness of this collaboration. Cho Ray Hospital coordinated with Mat Troi Phu Quoc Hospital to provide emergency care for an Indian patient requiring urgent coronary intervention. Leveraging Mat Troi Phu Quoc Hospital's modern equipment and Cho Ray Hospital's specialized support, the intervention was performed successfully on the island. The patient was later discharged and returned to India.

This case illustrates that combining advanced infrastructure and equipment with the professional expertise of a central hospital allows for the on-site management of dangerous conditions like acute myocardial infarction or stroke, reducing reliance on mainland transfers.

Under the comprehensive professional cooperation agreement, Cho Ray Hospital will initially assist Mat Troi Phu Quoc Hospital in implementing necessary emergency techniques and solutions to ensure patient safety from the initial hours. Subsequently, the two hospitals will continue to collaborate on enhancing professional capabilities, aiming to develop Mat Troi Phu Quoc Hospital into a high-quality medical facility.

Following the signing ceremony, attended by provincial leaders, leaders of the Phu Quoc Special Zone, and witnessed by leaders from the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Administration, a meeting was held to finalize implementation details. The two hospitals agreed to establish coordinated procedures for managing stroke and acute myocardial infarction cases in Phu Quoc. Patients experiencing these conditions will be taken to Mat Troi Phu Quoc Hospital, which will then connect with Cho Ray Hospital for consultations, professional coordination, and timely emergency care. The Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Administration commended the proactive spirit of both hospitals.

Through this cooperative mechanism, Dr. Viet anticipates better protection for Phu Quoc residents and tourists against dangerous diseases that were previously difficult to treat comprehensively on the island. In the long term, Cho Ray Hospital will continue to support Mat Troi Phu Quoc Hospital in enhancing its professional capacity and service quality. This will enable the hospital to not only meet the emergency needs of residents and tourists but also become a high-quality medical facility that patients actively choose for examination and treatment.

The director referenced the traditional Vietnamese saying about the essential conditions for a livable place: "electricity, roads, schools, and medical stations." Hospitals are among the top concerns for residents. The establishment of Mat Troi Phu Quoc Hospital gives islanders the feeling of living near a modern hospital, fostering greater peace of mind for the community, especially for residents and visitors in the southern part of the island.

Mat Troi Phu Quoc Hospital is part of the Sun Group Healthcare high-quality medical system, developed by Sun Group. The signing of this comprehensive professional cooperation agreement with Cho Ray Hospital and Military Hospital 175 on 25/7 marks a new step in enhancing the Pearl Island's medical capabilities. This development comes as Phu Quoc prepares for APEC 2027 and aims to become an international tourism, resort, and event hub.

Under the agreement, Cho Ray Hospital will collaborate with Mat Troi Phu Quoc Hospital on a range of professional activities, including direct and remote consultations, support for treating complex cases, technical transfer, personnel training, and referral coordination when necessary. The partnership with Military Hospital 175 focuses on refining the emergency, transfer, and patient transport chain, particularly for urgent air ambulance cases.
