Male erectile function is closely linked to vascular health. According to Urologist Huang Guan-jun from China, four types of foods—dark leafy greens, pistachios, berries, and watermelon—have been medically proven to protect and maintain erectile function. Watermelon, rich in citrulline, is even dubbed "natural Viagra".
On his personal page, Dr. Huang Guan-jun detailed a ranking of these four foods:
Rank 4: dark leafy greens
Dark leafy greens, such as spinach and arugula, contain rich amounts of nitrate. When consumed, nitrate converts into nitric oxide (NO) in the body, promoting vasodilation and increasing blood flow to organs. Clinical studies also confirm that nitrate can improve endothelial health, helping blood vessel walls maintain elasticity and support normal erectile function.
Rank 3: pistachios
These nuts are rich in arginine, a core component the body uses to synthesize nitric oxide. One study showed that participants who consumed 100 g of pistachios daily for three weeks experienced significant improvements in blood flow to the corpus cavernosum and erectile rigidity. However, due to their relatively high fat content, Dr. Huang recommends moderate consumption.

Rank 2: berries
Whether strawberries or blueberries, berries contain large amounts of anthocyanins, potent antioxidants that protect blood vessel walls and maintain the flexibility and youthfulness of the circulatory system. A 10-year Harvard University study involving 25,000 men revealed that regular weekly consumption of berries reduced the risk of erectile dysfunction by up to 14%.
Rank 1: watermelon
Dr. Huang Guan-jun emphasizes that watermelon deserves the title of "natural Viagra". This fruit is rich in citrulline, a precursor that converts into arginine in the body, stimulating the release of large amounts of nitric oxide. This process then dilates blood vessels in the corpus cavernosum, increasing blood flow. A study published in a reputable specialized journal in 2011 demonstrated that citrulline supplementation effectively improved mild cases of erectile dysfunction.
Dr. Huang Guan-jun further notes that these foods can be incorporated into a daily diet as a proactive health measure. However, if men are experiencing pathological issues related to erectile dysfunction, the best approach is to consult specialists for proper examination and comprehensive treatment advice.
