According to doctor Nguyen Thi Kieu Linh from the Department of Nephrology and Dialysis at Tam Anh Cau Giay General Clinic, hot weather can easily lead to dehydration and fluid imbalance, affecting kidney filtering function if not properly managed. Adjusting the following four habits can help stabilize kidney function.
Drink enough water
High summer temperatures cause the body to lose water more quickly through sweat. If not adequately replenished, blood becomes concentrated, increasing the burden on the kidneys during the filtration and waste excretion process, which contributes to an elevated risk of kidney stone formation.
Adults should drink water regularly throughout the day, without waiting until they feel thirsty. Water can also be supplemented from fruits and vegetables. It is advisable to limit drinks high in sugar or caffeine. The average water intake is about two to three liters per day, depending on the body's needs and activity level.
Exercise appropriately
Regular physical activity can improve circulation, help manage weight, and reduce the risk of metabolic diseases that affect the kidneys, such as diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. During hot weather, choose appropriate times for exercise, such as early morning or late afternoon, to avoid intense sun. Light forms of exercise like walking, yoga, or swimming are suitable for many people, especially those with kidney disease.

Limit alcohol
Alcohol can worsen dehydration and cause electrolyte imbalances. When the body lacks fluids, the kidneys must work harder to maintain internal stability. Alcohol also acts as a diuretic, causing the body to lose additional water and essential minerals, thereby affecting kidney function if consumed regularly and in large quantities.
Limit sugary drinks
During hot weather, many people tend to choose soft drinks, iced tea, or other sugary beverages to quench their thirst. However, frequent consumption of these drinks can increase blood sugar levels, which in turn affects kidney function.
Sustained high blood sugar is a risk factor for diabetes, a leading cause of chronic kidney disease. Therefore, limiting sugary drinks is essential to protect kidney health. Choosing filtered water, mineral water, or sparkling water combined with a slice of lemon or passion fruit can enhance flavor while remaining safe.
In addition to scientific lifestyle habits, doctor Linh recommends that everyone undergo regular health check-ups and monitor relevant indicators to detect abnormalities early, intervene promptly, and protect kidney function.
