Stomach cancer develops when abnormal, malignant cells grow within the stomach. This disease carries a high mortality rate; its early symptoms are often subtle, leading to late diagnosis and challenging treatment.
According to Dr. Ngo Tuan Phuc, a Level I Specialist and Master of Science at the Oncology Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, adopting healthy lifestyle changes can help prevent stomach cancer.
Healthy nutrition
Eating plenty of green vegetables and fresh fruits, especially citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits, helps provide antioxidants, vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene, which protect the stomach lining. Increasing legume intake supplies fiber and isoflavones, supporting stable digestion.
Prioritize healthy protein sources such as fish, poultry, or legumes instead of red meat and processed meats. Limit smoked foods, oily fried dishes, high-salt items, and processed foods, as these can contain inflammatory agents that irritate the stomach lining, increasing the risk of ulcers and cancer.

Maintain a calm mind, avoid stress
Prolonged stress impacts the stomach by increasing inflammatory responses and irritating the digestive tract. Individuals should get adequate sleep, practice deep breathing exercises in the morning and before bedtime, and combine these with gentle exercise, listening to music, or other relaxation techniques to maintain a calm mind.
Avoid exposure to toxic environments
According to Dr. Phuc, regular exposure to asbestos and pesticides harms health. When these substances enter the body, they damage cellular DNA, promoting cancer formation. If chemical exposure is unavoidable, ensure full protective gear is worn, including masks that filter dust and toxic gases. Additionally, maintain a well-ventilated living environment, clean indoor air, avoid overusing strong detergents, and ensure access to clean water sources.
Regular physical exercise
Consistent physical activity boosts immunity, aids digestion, and reduces the risk of stomach cancer and many other cancers, including lung, bladder, and breast cancer. Individuals should maintain an exercise routine suitable for their physical condition, with at least 30 minutes daily, for five days each week.
In addition to adjusting lifestyle and nutrition, Dr. Phuc advises everyone to undergo regular health check-ups. If infected with Helicobacter pylori (HP) bacteria, or suffering from stomach ulcers and inflammation, patients should visit a hospital for examination and treatment, taking prescribed medication to control the condition and prevent complications.
