Many individuals, upon discovering high blood sugar, mistakenly cut out all carbohydrates like rice and noodles, believing them to be the culprits. However, Dr. Hsiao Chieh-chien, a specialist in weight loss and metabolism, demonstrated the opposite through a clinical case: a patient lost 10 kg in four months, reduced her waist circumference by 10 cm, and brought her blood sugar levels from a dangerous range to a healthy one, all while regularly consuming white rice.
Analyzing this case, Dr. Hsiao explained that the female patient chose to eliminate refined sugar and ultra-processed foods, opting instead for natural foods. She utilized whole carbohydrate sources, such as white rice, as high-quality fuel for her body. This was combined with aerobic exercises and resistance training, following a principle of eating more on training days and less on rest days.
According to Dr. Hsiao, the key lies in "carbohydrate cycling," which involves adjusting intake based on daily activity levels. During high-intensity or weight training, muscles are like dry sponges, thirsty for energy.
At this time, the white rice consumed is directly absorbed by the muscles and converted into a potent energy source, preventing excess sugar in the blood that can cause health problems. This method effectively stabilizes blood sugar.

Dr. Hsiao noted that muscles are the body's largest consumers of sugar. As muscle mass increases, the body's ability to absorb carbohydrates naturally rises, and insulin sensitivity significantly improves. By adopting this method, the patient not only achieved ideal physical metrics but also saw her average blood sugar (HbA1c) drop from 9,7% to 5,8%. Previously, she could not lift an 18 kg child; now she can carry a 31 kg child while walking.
In fact, modern medical professionals are increasingly emphasizing "carbohydrate quality." Instead of drastically cutting carbohydrates to zero, doctors advise focusing on food sources, prioritizing natural carbohydrates, and combining them with regular muscle training. This approach helps the body transition from a "storage mode" to an "efficient burning mode," alleviating the fear many dieters experience when faced with a bowl of white rice.
