Manh, a 24-year-old patient, received a diagnosis of severe metabolic disorder after experiencing a range of concerning symptoms. His condition, characterized by obesity, high blood sugar, and elevated blood pressure, highlights a growing trend of metabolic issues affecting younger individuals.
An InBody scan revealed Manh was suffering from grade two obesity, with a body mass index (BMI) of 32 and visceral fat levels double the safe threshold. Doctor Lam Van Hoang, Head of the Endocrinology - Diabetes Department at Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, confirmed the severe metabolic disorder. Manh's symptoms included a large waistline of 102 cm, high triglyceride levels, reduced cholesterol concentration, and unstable blood pressure and blood sugar.
Metabolic disorder is a syndrome defined by a large waist circumference due to excess abdominal fat, hypertension, abnormal fasting blood sugar or insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. This condition significantly increases the risk of developing complications such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

Doctor Hoang explained that metabolic disorder is typically seen in middle-aged individuals due to aging and a slower metabolism, which can lead to hormonal imbalances. However, the condition is now affecting younger populations. Factors contributing to this include work pressure, sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy eating habits, resulting in excess energy intake and fat accumulation. Treatment often involves managing each individual issue, such as hypertension, blood sugar levels, abdominal fat, cholesterol imbalance, and weight control.
Manh's treatment involved a collaborative approach from endocrinologists, nutritionists, and exercise specialists, all focused on helping him reduce weight and abdominal fat. Beyond medication, Manh modified his diet by reducing sweets and increasing his intake of green vegetables, beans, whole grains, and lean meats. He also incorporated regular exercise, including jogging, cycling, and weight training, for at least 30 minutes daily.

After three months, Manh successfully lost over 14 kg, and his waistline decreased by 10 cm. Follow-up test results showed significant positive changes in his metabolic disorder: his blood sugar and blood pressure stabilized, and his triglyceride and cholesterol levels markedly improved.
